To Be Young, Gifted and Black is a testament to Jeffrey Kent’s artistic journey and personal experiences. The title of this body of artwork is informed by Nina Simone’s song from her Black Gold LP from 1971. Harking back to Kent’s 2004-2007 body of artwork, FASHION TRENDS AND STEREOTYPES, this body of artwork invites viewers to engage in a dialogue about identity, vulnerability, and the complex interplay between individuals and their society. Through self-reflections on canvas and on birch wood panels, Kent has executed paintings of himself wearing a hoodie, as a symbol of the vulnerability and perceived threat faced by Black individuals in today's world, many times, JUST FOR BEING BLACK. Kent challenges the audience to face their preconceptions and reevaluate the stories shaping their worldview while experiencing these paintings.
